Embracing Aging: How I Learned to Love Every Birthday

“Embracing Aging: How I Learned to Love Every Birthday”

My turning point in embracing the beauty of aging occurred when I was about to hit the milestone of 40 and let me tell you, that was a turning point in every sense of the word. From that moment on, I’ve celebrated every birthday with open arms, cherishing each passing year as a precious gift.

Dreading The Next Number

Before that momentous birthday, I had often dreaded growing older. The idea of leaving my 30s behind was daunting, and I couldn’t help but focus on the physical changes that age inevitably brings. The mirror seemed to reflect at me the passage of time, and I wasn’t always ready to accept it.

The Shift

However, as my 40th birthday drew near, something shifted within me. It was as if the universe whispered, “Embrace this journey, for it is a privilege denied to many.” And so, I decided to change the way I looked at aging, just as Wayne Dyer had wisely said, “If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.”

I realized that aging is a natural part of life, a process that we all go through. It’s not something to be feared but something to be celebrated. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing since that fateful 40th birthday.

Instead of seeing the passing years as a reminder of the inevitable, I began to view them as a testament to a life well lived. Those wrinkles and gray hairs weren’t signs of decay; they were the marks of my journey—lines that told stories of joy, sorrow, and resilience.

The Gift

Aging also brought with it a gift.  I found myself with the freedom to explore new passions and interests. Travel, economics, and supporting other women—these are just a few of the pursuits I eagerly embrace, as each day brings new opportunities, that I would have turned away from in my youth.

Nothing is Perfect

Of course, it wasn’t always easy. Society’s obsession with youth and the relentless pursuit of looking younger could be challenging to navigate. But I had come to understand that there was more to life than trying to reverse the clock. And that key was to focus on the present moment.

Not every day was perfect, and some came with physical challenges and limitations. However, I learned to find the good in each day. The simple pleasures—a warm cup of tea, a stunning sunset, my beautiful cat—became the jewels in the crown of my life.

As I continued my journey, I also realized the importance of changing societal perceptions of aging. We live in a world that often idolizes youth, but it’s essential to honor and celebrate the wisdom and resilience that come with age.

I joined groups and communities of like-minded individuals who were determined to redefine what it meant to grow older. Together, we share our stories and inspire one another to live life to the fullest, no matter our age.

In the end, I’ve come to understand that nothing in life is perfect, and aging is no exception. But within its imperfection, there is profound beauty. Each day is a gift, and it’s up to us to unwrap it with gratitude and joy.

It’s Not Over

So, my journey began at the turning point of 40, and I’ve continued to embrace and celebrate every birthday since. I’ve learned that by changing the way we look at aging, we can change not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us. It’s a journey of embracing the privilege of growing older and cherishing every moment, wrinkles and all.
